Anthony Peters Pre-Game Ritual

Anthony Peters, brother of Justin Peters, is a 17 year old OHLer who is not NHL draft eligible until 2009. He plays for the Kingston Frontenacs. Unfortunately, Anthony is out for the whole 2007/2008 season due to a broken leg.

Here is his entry:

Our home games are every Friday night, which is a school day for me. I wake up early so I am not in a rush. I want to be relaxed on a game day from the moment I wake up until the buzzer rings to end the game. I have a fried egg sandwich on game days for breakfast. I leave my house around 8 for school. I drink lots of water during the day to keep myself hydrated. After school I usually have time to take an hour and a half nap. I eat chicken and pasta for my pre-game meal every time. When I get to the rink I change into my 'gitch' (undergarments).

Our coaches provide us with a scouting report of the opposing team. I like to read it over so I am aware of certain players as well as the opponent’s game plan. I then tape my sticks. I use a different stick in warm-up than I use in the game. I always tape my warm-up stick before I tape my game stick. After the sticks are taken care of I do a quick little stretch to get my muscles warmed-up. Then I head out in the hall and a couple of the guys like to hack up the soccer ball. I like to play for a bit because it keeps me loose. After soccer I grab a tennis ball and try to find a quiet spot to throw the ball at the wall. I watch the ball hit the wall and then watch it go into my hand. One thing that Jon always says to me is to watch the puck, follow it from the stick to your body and off of your body. So I like throwing the ball at the wall because it gets my eyes and hands warmed up.

Our coach always comes in an hour before the game and says his speech. After we have a team jog then stretch. I always do the same foot speed drills in the same order after our stretch. I start getting dressed when we have 30 minutes until warm up. I always get dressed the same way before every game. I put my left leg or arm into things first. I like to get dressed slowly and I like to be dressed early so that I can still feel relaxed. When I skate on the ice I always do one and a half laps then head to my net. The most important thing to my routine is to stay relaxed and calm, and I think that it transfers into my game because I like to be calm in my net and not be all over my crease.

Testimonial

"As both a parent and a coach I was very pleased with not only the experience and knowledge that Jon was able to pass on to my son, but what I found most notable was Jon's ability to communicate with each individual and get the most out of each goaltender. I have known Jon for many years but to see him work first-hand with my son was very encouraging. My son went home each day more enthusiastic and passionate for the position then when he arrived. Great job Jon."
