Pregame Routines, Rituals and Superstitions

I am constantly asked about game preparation. Goaltenders want to know how they should get ready to play. The answer is complex as everyone is different and no two goaltenders prepare in the exact same manner. There are however, some general trends that are apparent in how successful goalies get ready to play.

The overall trend shows that successful goaltenders have special routines that they follow to get ready for competition. They don’t just show up and wing it. They pay particular attention to getting proper rest and nutrition as well as physically and mentally warming up prior to going out on the ice. Some have minor superstitions, but the smart goalie realizes that these aren’t what enable a goaltender to play well. The most important thing is the dedication it takes to prepare.

I have asked a number of my students to explain what they do on game-day. I have also asked them to describe any superstitions or rituals they may partake in on game-day as well. Not only should these experiences be interesting to read, but I think they will help you with your own preparation as well.
