Coyotes Win Division
Mike Smith followed up his three shutouts in a row with two one goal games that helped propel his Phoenix Coyotes into the third Western Conference seed for the playoffs. On Friday, "Smitty" turned aside 31 shots in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues earning the 1st star. Saturday, The 'Yotes beat Minnesota 4-1 with Smith facing 24 shots and being named the game's 3rd star. It was Phoenix's first division title in their history.
Mike finished the season with a remarkable .930 save percentage (3rd in NHL), a low 2.21 GAA, 38 wins (4th in the league) and 8 shutouts (3rd in NHL). Some are calling for a Vezina trophy nomination. His coach Dave Tippett commented: "He's embraced the No. 1 goaltender role with our team and he's played excellent. He had a few games there where he was basically willing us into the playoffs. His game is top-notch right now. Hopefully it goes into the playoffs and that continues." They start the playoffs Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
