Mike Smith earned the first star of the game against the Boston Bruins Thursday night. He made 35 saves in the 3-1 victory. The only shot to beat him was a shoulder high tip off of a point shot with 8 minutes left in the match. "Smitty" continued his mastery on breakaways denying Phil Kessel by holding his ground and battling hard. Some of the star players Mike has stopped thus far on breakaways this season are Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Marian Gaborik. Smith has also stopped an incredible nine out of nine shootout attempts in his career.
Since the trade that brought Smith to the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Dallas Stars, Mike has allowed two or less goals in three of his five starts.
