Murray Stands Tall

Matt Murray had a terrific game in goal for Team Canada at the World U18 Championships today in a quarterfinal win over Russia. He made 28 saves in the 4-2 victory. His most spectacular stop occurred near the beginning of the third period on a broken play. Murray, having butterflied on the left side of the crease, extended with his blocker as the puck squirted to a Russian player on the far side of the goal. The Russian forward had an open net to shoot for and fired a shot that was labelled for the top corner. Murray exteded his arm and leg and got a piece of the puck with his blocker. It was eneough to thwart any thought of a Russian comeback.

Murray, who plays for the Soo St. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL, is considered a top prospect for the NHL draft in June. Matt stands 6'4" and hails from Thunder Bay, Ontario.
