Smith vs Taylor

Mike Smith earned his third shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over the Calgary Flames. Danny Taylor, making his first NHL start (he previously came in relief for the LA Kings five years ago), was at the losing end of the competition between two friends. Danny, who first attended Jon Elkin's Goalie Schools in Ottawa as a 12 year old, is married to Danielle, Mike Smith's neighbour and good friend growing up. Danielle was also a goalie - a very good one - who also came to the goalie school in the summer. The two are expecting their first child who will have some tremendous goalie genes if he or she decides to pursue the position!

Taylor, in the opinion of Jon Elkin, "Was the most talented youngster I have ever coached. He was super quick, atheletic and supremely confident. He was so confident that he had a hot dog painted on his mask"! Danny went on to play in the OHL, signed with the Los Angeles Kings and has been playing in the minor leagues for the last six years. He so dominated the AHL over the last two seasons that the Flames recently signed him to a NHL contract. An eager student of the game, workout fiend, extremely hard worker on the ice and humble guy, Taylor, who is lightning quick, should continue to get opportunities to prove he belongs in the NHL. He has been both a student and instructor at Jon Elkin's Goalie Schools over the years.
